Keeping the Machine Oiled!

We all know that we reap the benefits if we keep in touch. The frequency and consistency of communications is essential and keeps people feeling warm and fuzzy about you. So why don’t we?

Well over the past three months I have been in this situation where I haven’t kept in touch. Sure there have been extenuating circumstances, but…

Whilst understanding what was going on, I tracked what was happening or more to the point what wasn’t happening.

Writers block
One could say there was writers block. Here are the common symptoms of writers block:

  • Tried to write without brainstorming or outlining
  • Chosen a chosen that doesn’t interest me
  • Don’t want to spend the time writing
  • Anxious about writing
  • Too stressed to be able to put a word on the page
  • Self conscious about my writing style

Although stress may have been a factor, these didn’t feel right. It felt that there was something else happening.

Feelings
Using a technique that is probably part of the NLP arsenal, I stepped into a time when writing was easy, enjoyable and just flowed. What was different then to now? Well, there was an excitement inside as the words came – just as they are now. But, wait there was more…

Delivery Style
Then it struck me – writing wasn’t really my preferred way of delivering material. There was no trouble preparing for talks, presentations and the recent conferences. The difference being, the written preparation was for the delivery through talking rather than just text.  This was a eureka moment!

We are conditioned to text and from the statistic that 75% of the population learn through reading and watching, it seems that the emphasis remains textual for sometime to come. Although, video does start to redress the balance for us auditory deliverers!

So, now I am happy knowing that I deliver best through speaking – my writing has also started to flow! Don’t you just love the way the human mind works.

Takeaways if this happens to you!
Take some time to reflect on how you best deliver information
Become aware when you easily get into your flow
Find ways that you can incorporate how you like to deliver with other forms of delivery
Rejoice in the diversity within yourself and in the wider population
Be kind to others who fall off the writing treadmill – they may be auditory deliverers
